What are synthetic ice rinks made of?
Synthetic ice rinks are typically made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) panels. These plastic sheets are designed to simulate the glide of real ice without requiring refrigeration. While they can be installed easily and require no energy for cooling, they differ significantly in performance.
The skating experience on synthetic ice is less smooth due to higher friction. This impacts both comfort and performance, especially for experienced skaters. Additionally, synthetic surfaces require regular lubrication and maintenance to maintain usability.
In contrast, real ice (like the systems provided by Ice-World) offers a superior experience in terms of glide, speed, and overall feel. For commercial applications where visitor experience and repeat visits matter, real ice remains the preferred choice. It also aligns better with professional standards for skating disciplines.
