How do we green our energy consumption?
Although all electricity is delivered through the same grid and is technically considered 'gray' energy, there is an established way to green this consumption. For our European ice rinks, we do this through GoOs (Guarantees of Origin). These official certificates confirm that an equivalent amount of energy has been sustainably generated elsewhere in Europe.
Here’s how we purchase GoOs (Guarantees of Origin)
To be fully transparent: we purchase GoOs through Groenbalans, who buy these certificates from VertiCer, the official body in the Netherlands responsible for issuing and managing Guarantees of Origin. VertiCer manages a central registry where renewable energy producers (such as wind and solar farms) register their generated power. In this system, you can even trace the source and type of energy. A GoO is the only legally recognized proof that energy has been produced sustainably.
In this system, you can even trace exactly where the renewable energy comes from and which type of source was used — in our case, it’s European solar and wind energy. A GoO is the only legally recognized proof that a certain amount of energy has been sustainably generated.
And outside Europe?
* For our ice rinks outside Europe, we use a different system: International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs). This works similarly to GoOs, but is globally applicable in countries outside Europe. Through this system, we ensure that the energy consumption is sustainably offset as soon as the season ends there.
Together towards a more sustainable future
By investing in these certificates year after year, we are gradually reducing our ecological footprint. This way, the joy of skating continues — without harming the planet. Below, you can download the certificate for the 2024-2025 season (July 2024 to June 2025).
