Ice rink on water

How mobile do you want it? A travelling mobile ice rink, mobile to the power of 2 in other words. In Germany, at Ice-World dealer Ice Business, nothing is ever a problem. So when Frankfurt radio station Hit Radio FFH came up with the idea of a mobile ice rink on a boat, the response was enthusiastic to say the least. What a great challenge!
This great challenge turned into a massive success. In a three-week period, the cities of Wiesbaden, Offenbach, Aschaffenburg, Mainz and Frankfurt were all visited via the Rhine and Main rivers. This unusual attraction attracted many people, with no fewer than 25,000 enthusiastic visitors coming on board to join in and experience this unique ice party.

An ice rink on a boat - it is, like so many things, easier said than done. Robert Buchner, Project Manager at Ice Business, explains: "The actual construction of the two ice rinks, of 210 and 270 square metres respectively, only took two days. But the planning beforehand lasted for no less than three weeks. Care is always taken, and especially so for this travelling ice rink. No less than 700 tonnes of sand were brought on board in order to keep the boat stable. Extra-high railings were also erected, just in case; we naturally had to make sure nobody could fall overboard! And we were successful in this, as there were no accidents."
The travelling skating party ended with a skating weekend on the docks in Kassel. A skating village was set up there, with all the trimmings. A brilliant ending, as Hit Radio FFH representative Dominik Kuhn described it, "to a massively successful event!"
