Technical

What size should an ice rink be?
The average ice arena is 600m2 or 20x30 metres. Larger towns usually choose larger ice arenas. The standard length of an ice arena is 30 metres. Other sizes are available.
Does the surface under the ice rink has to be level?
Yes. Ice rinks are usually installed on a wooden floor, which has to be minimal one metre longer than the ice rink itself. This subfloor can be extended to serve as a deck. The load bearing capacity of the floor must be 300 kg/m2.
How much space does the plant take up?
The average space required for the installation of the ice rink system (cooling units, buffer tank and generator) is 35 m2, depending on the size of the ice rink. Exact details can be provided once the actual size of the ice rink is known.
How long does it take to construct an ice rink?
The portable aluminium ice rink system can be installed in a matter of hours. The ice-making takes between 12 and 24 hours.
Will someone inspect the site?
Yes, we will always inspect the site first. Following this inspection we will send you our organisation schedule specifying all the technical arrangements for the ice rink construction.
Who has technical responsibility for the ice rink during the event?
During the rental the ice master named in the organisation chart is responsible for the ice rinks system.

Operation

How many staff do we need?
This will very much depend on the site and the scale of the event. You will need a minimum of 2 staff when renting an icerink.
Are supervision and security required?
On a quiet day supervision by the cabin staff will usually suffice. However, on a busy skating day supervision is absolutely essential. From the moment of delivery until all materials have been removed security will be required, when the ice rink is not in use, hence particular at night.
Is a deck around the ice rink required?
The deck is very important and its surface area should be at least 30% of that of the ice arena.
How about safety on the ice rink itself?
Provide clear information about do’s and don’ts on the ice rink and recommend that skaters wear gloves. Make arrangement with the First Aid department and provide first aid facilities near the ice rink. Discourage skaters from racing.
How about routing?
The route from the ticket office to skate issue and the deck, the ice rink, catering outlets and exit must be planned properly in order to prevent skates from getting stolen, people entering without paying or poor turnover for catering outlets.
How do we recruit sponsors?
Creativity will go a long way, but you may want to use our experience to be even more successful in this respect. We will provide information on this subject.
What can we offer sponsors?
Advertising boards, use of the ice rink, Webcam advertising, slide presentation and leaflets are the obvious things you can offer sponsors. We will be happy to discuss more inventive ideas with you.
Can we place advertising boards along the ice rink?
The boarding around the ice rinks can be used to attach advertising boards, both on the inside and the outside. We have different types of boarding in stock.
Can we incorporate advertisements in the ice?
Yes. The material used must be porous, the colours bright and well defined. However, you should bear in mind that the advertisement will soon be obliterated by snow-like powder.
Should we cover the ice rink?
That depends on the location. A marquee offers security of skating no matter what weather conditions, but can adversely affect the atmosphere of the location.
How can we find out more?
We can provide you with all the information available to us about operating an ice rink. However, we will not do this until the ice rink has been booked.
How many people can the ice rink accommodate?
You will need approximately 3m2 per person.
Do people sometimes get hurt on the ice?
Ice is slippery and skates are sharp. By providing good supervision on the rink and taking preventive measures such as wearing gloves many minor accidents can be prevented. Make sure that First Aid facilities are provided.

Skates

Do you supply skates as well?
We usually supply skates as well. The standard number supplied is equal to 1/3 of the surface area of the rink.
How about sharpening the skates?
The skates are supplied sharpened. Thanks to the high quality steel of the skates we supply, they can generally be used for one month. Skates can be sharpened in between times.
What do we do if there are not enough skates?
We supply standard numbers of skates for each shoe size. Should this not be sufficient for one or several sizes, you can contact our skates courier for an extra delivery subject to availability. Do not ring for extra skates immediately, see how things go for a few days first.
How do we store the skates?
Event organisers usually have a cabin installed near the ice rink. Such a cabin will typically come with a ticket office, shelving units and a skate issue window. The average cabin size is 20 m2. For each pair of skates you will need shelf space of 20 cm wide, 30 cm high and 30 cm deep.
Where can we rent a cabin?
There are numerous suppliers. We can provide you with advice on this matter.
Do skates get stolen?
Yes, invariably a number of skates go missing. If large numbers are stolen either routing or security has not been organised properly.

Environment/Energy/License

What are the energy costs?
The energy costs of an ice rink will depend on the size and type of the ice rink, the rental period and the weather conditions. As a rough guide, the energy costs of an ice rink of 600m2 will be EUR 1.500 per week.
What if the available power supply is insufficient?
We have a range of generators available. We cannot accept a generator from another supplier due to our responsibility for the ice quality. See quotation for price information.
How do we obtain a permit?
You have to apply to the local authorities for a permit. Environmental aspects will be taken into consideration in the assessment of your application. We can provide further information about this.
How about environmental considerations?
Ice-World uses the more expensive, but environmentally friendly refrigerant propylene glycol. Product data sheets can be provided on request. Propylene glycol is also used in the food processing industry. Moreover, all Ice-World rinks are running on green energy powered by wind turbines.

Financial

How much costs an ice rink?

The price of an ice rink depends on a variety of factors, such as rink size and rental period. Ice rink rental accounts form only a small part of the overall budget for a skating event.
The remainder is spent on items such as clothing, advertising, personnel, energy, insurance, tent and flooring.
To give you an indication: the overall budget for a 3-week skating event, using a 450 m2 ice rink, is about hundred thousand euros. You should bear in mind that much of this can be funded through sponsoring and entry fees, skate rental and catering revenues.

We can provide you with a detailed quote. Remember, however, that this price should not be taken at face value compared to quotes using EPDM or other systems. The revolutionary aluminium rink can be installed within a few hours, which will mean a saving on labour and security costs. This type of ice rink is very energy efficient and reliable.

Do we have to insure the ice rink?
We are insured for product liability and transport. The client has to insure the ice rink against war risk and theft. The sum insured for the complete ice rink should be calculated on the basis of EUR 300 per square metre of ice floor. This insurance can be taken out with Ice-World as well.
When do we have to reserve an ice rink?
If you are not certain that the event will go ahead, but you want to be sure that you can rent a rink, we recommend you to make a reservation. This will be without obligation until the agreed date.

Ice floor

How do we remove the ice after the event?
The cooling unit will be replaced by a boiler, which will heat the refrigerant. It will take between 12 and 24 hours for the ice to melt.
How much water is needed?
Approximately 1,000 litres for every ten square metres of ice. For an ice rink of 600m2 you will need 60m3 (60,000 litres) of water.
How do we supply the water?
Make arrangements with the fire brigade or water supplier well before the event. The required specifications are listed in our organisation schedule.
How long does it take to make the ice?
Depending on the weather, between 12 and 24 hours.
How do we maintain the ice?
This can be done manually for ice rinks up to 600m2. Ice-World provides show boards. For larger rinks we can provide motorised sweepers.
What do we do with the snow-like powder?
When an ice rink is used intensively a lot of snow-like powder will be produced. Create a separate area at one the side of the rink or use a container to dispose of this powder.
What happens when it rains?
Rainwater is relatively warm and will cause the surface of the ice to melt. When it stops raining the ice will dry again. There is no need to close the ice rink when it rains.
At what temperature does the ice start to melt?
With the aluminium ice rink system we can make ice up to a temperature of 25°C. The cooling capacity can be increased if required. Wind and direct sunlight have a greater impact on the ice than the ambient temperature.
